One is good

Two is better

Or at least that's the hope in Eagan, MN as the squad went back to back near the end of round three. With the Sam Darnold compensatory selection they added a long-term backup who may be the replacement for Brian O'Niell should his production and contract situation no longer sync.

The newly-acquired Greenard pick resulted in the long-awaited successor to Harrison Smith, should he not come back for another last ride to make Jakobe Thomas his understudy.

Some may focus on Tiernan's size when they talk about him, I think the most noteworthy fact is the number of start he has to lean on - north of 40 with even more experience coming as a reserve. That doesn't guarantee anything but should help his learning curve in adjusting to the top level competition. The best outcome is that he almost never gets on the field this year and then maybe has a shot in 2027.

Then there's the Hurricane. Thomas worked his way up from Middle Tennessee to a leading role for the National Runner-up. As his highlights indicate, he played all over the place for Miami with experience going back to 2022 as a wildcard. Just the sort of player that can make life even more difficult for quarterbacks trying to evade the rebuilt front.

There's no anointing of day-1 starters but as the first playmaker of this draft class he has the inside track to joining the controlled chaos.

Selection Grade (Tiernan): B-

Selection Grade (Thomas): B+

It's generally obvious to say but all five picks so far should be good for the 53. Considering the recent track-record for selections, that is already a positive change.
